Potential Student Magazine Covers

College Magazine Analysis 3

The masthead is in bold, block capitals, this is to stand out. The middle of the masthead is being covered up Jeffrey 'assassin' Campbell's head, this is to suggest that the magazine is very well known; the full masthead doesn't have to be seen for the viewer to know what magazine its is, this technique is used by sensational magazines such as rolling stones etc.

The cover lines are different colours and fonts so they all stand out. None of the stories go over his face or too for over his body, this is so he is the main attraction. Most of the cover lines are cliche stories which teenagers are attracted; teenagers are the audience of this magazine.

The central image is Jeffrey 'assassin' Campbell, he is casually dressed, this widens the magazine's audience. He is glaring straight into the camera to engage the viewer's attention. He is carrying 'law', business' and 'society' revision books which connotes college. He has a cross around his neck which could attract Christians as the cross has connotations of god and belief; the cross could also attract many African Americans as it is a very popular fashion accessory, hence why Jeffrey himself is wearing it.

College Magazine Analysis 2

The masthead is in big block capitals which has complete contrast on the rest of the magazine. This magazine was published during the summer hence why the masthead is written in orange. The central image, Oraine Barrett, is overlapping the middle of the masthead which suggests that the magazine is very well known; the whole masthead doesn't have to be seen.

Most of the cover lines are in different colours or fonts; they all individually stand out, every story is equally promoted. Just above the bar code in the bottom left hand corner states the models name then a description on who he is 'Caribbean international face of the decade', this emphasizes that he is a worldwide sensation. This will make a lot of people buy the magazine because he is the 'international face of the decade'; a lot of readers will know him or want to know why he is so successful.

The central image is Oraine Barrett, a model from Caribbean. He is glazing straight at the camera/ the viewer, inviting them in. His white attire, clashed with the white background makes his face the reader's main attraction as it is the complete contrast. This is because he is a internationally known so the magazine will have a wide audience. His white outfit has connotations with luxury and class; the reader will feel upper class while reading it. The clothing he is wearing attracts a very wide; he's dressed in a shirt and trousers which attracts wealthy readers as he's appealing to them but he's not ever doing it with a blazer nor a tie which attracts working class readers, this is also emphasized how he's leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, this makes him seem cool and laid back.

Advert Analysis/ Semiotics

Position signs: the camera and the viewer -

The man is staring right at the camera/ the viewer to engage their attention. He's giving the viewer a glimpse of the lifestyle when buying Wella Shockwaves styling products. The way he is stood makes it seem that he is stood right with you.

The pack shot of the products are in the bottom of the right hand corner, this is done so the product is literally at your fingertips as you turn the page.

Treatment signs: devices of filming and of processing -

The use of sharp focus and lighting to emphasise the results of using the product. The lightning also makes the woman and the people in the background look less significant, this makes the man look the center on attention; as will the reader if they use the product themselves.

Content signs: Objects in the picture and their placing -

The pool table has connotations with 'Style. Attract. Play', and also the 'play button' logo. The viewer can see that the man is about to pot the black; this wins the game and can be interpenetrated as that he feels confident with his chances with the woman.  The woman, who has very glamorous hair, a short vest top which shows her cleavage is used to clarify the slogan 'perfect hit' that can be 'scored'. She is leaning forward to emphasise her short top, staring at the man- giving the impression she is drawn to him because he used this £2.79 product, The background shows a chandelier  and velvet curtains. The product is very much affordable but the advert sells it as by using it you will live an exceptional lifestyle. Both the man and woman are groomed well and are dressed fairly casual, this is so the advert appeals to a wide audience.

College Magazine Analysis 1

The masthead is a huge, bold title which stands out. The colour is blue, which suits the blue background, but has a contrast of brightness so it's easily visible.

One of the cover lines used reads 'I slept with my professor', it is wrote here to tell the reader that this is a big story within the magazine and will continue inside. The word 'professor' is going along Mike Posner's right shoulder which suggests that the story is more important than this well known celebrity.

The central image is Mike Posner, a signer who released hit single around the time this magazine was published hence the reason a cover line reads 'Mike Posner is cooler than you' a pun to promote his well known song, 'cooler than me'. Mike Posner is a perfect person to have as the central image of the college magazine because the majority of students will know who he is and so a lot of readers will buy this magazine due to him. He is staring straight at the camera/reader which draws their attention.
Most of the cover lines are placed around the central image, this is so the central image is the main focus for the audience.

The bar-code at the bottom right hand corner is to clarify the price, in this case the magazine is free. Magazines usually place the bar code here so its literally in the readers fingertips.
